The Shining

The Shining

By: Stephen King
Reviewer: Victor, 15
Rating: Loved it!

One of the most terrifying movies ever, you say? Of all time, you say? It may be so but it didn't happen just because of the director (Stanley Kubrick). This story was written by the famous Stephen King.

For those of you that aren't familiar with this story:

The Shining- "The novel follows the story of Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic and writer, who accepts the position as winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, which sits in the Colorado Rockies. He moves into the hotel for closing season with his wife Wendy and five year old son Danny, who has psychic abilities which enable him to see aspects of the hotel's horrific past. Soon, after a winter storm cuts them off from the outside world, an evil force in the hotel springs into life and influences Jack's sanity, writing and alcoholism, leaving the family in incredible danger." -Wikipedia

This is Stephen King's third published novel but that does not mean that he hadn't mastered horrific writing by then. This book is a psychologically horrifying tale of The Overlook Hotel and what happens there. After much background and establishment, the story introduces a new element that makes the story much more interesting. That element is not a cook but a chef. A chef that can surprisingly connect in the strangest of ways with one of our main characters.

Through twists and turns, these haunted pages will satisfy any horror bluff and fill the cravings of King's Mightiest fans.

FINAL VERDICT: No hedge animals near my house but a yes to The Shining on my bookshelf.
