The Alpha Bet

The Alpha Bet

By: Stephanie Hale

Rating: Really liked it

"Some teenagers use drugs or sex to escape overbearing parents. I used books." One of the best parts of this book is the ability to make you laugh out loud before you even realize you thought it was funny. Stephanie Hale wrote Grace Kelly Cook, a klutzy, nerdy 16-year-old genius, so well that you feel embarrassed when she dribbles sauce on herself or is decapitating Charlie with her kitten heel. And the best part is, Grace Kelly is almost oblivious.

The book begins with Grace Kelly moving into the dorms at McMillian College. Her overprotective mother is shocked at the idea of a coed dorm and voices her opinion expressively. Hale creates Grace Kelly's (or GK as her roommate, Jentry calls her) perfectly with her overbearing mom, laid back father and pervert brother. Grace Kelly soon finds out about the Alphas, the most elite sorority on campus. The next chapters is a blur of makeovers and rushing the Alphas. Grace Kelly and Jentry become best friends a little too fast, which is the only negative thing about the book. But the real conflict starts at rush.

One of the new freshmen, has it out immediately for Grace Kelly. So in order to get in the Alphas, she tells one tiny white lie- she's really a legacy. But before initiation can begin, the sisters set up a bet. 26 tasks are made by the sisters and are expected to be completed by the new pledges to show their loyalty. Between cutting up the cheerleaders underwear and stealing back their underwater from the guy's fraternity, Charlie discovers her lie. And he's not all that happy about it. This book was over far too fast and leaves you wishing there was more. A perfect summer read.
